One of the Many Ways an Arvada West High School Counselor Gives Back |
The Outdoor Lab Foundation is once again participating as a Charity Partner with the Colfax Marathon. We are searching for runners to help make a difference in the lives of 5,000 6th graders that visit every year! As the race celebrates 20 years, participate in the 5k, 10-miler, Relay, Half, or Full Marathon and select Outdoor Lab Foundation as your Charity Partner.
We asked Arvada West Counselor, Annamae Boots, why she runs year after year and what helps her cross that finish line! |
1. What inspires you to participate in one of the Colfax Marathon races annually, and how do you prepare for your big day?
I’m inspired by the challenge of the unknown. This year, I’m stepping up to my first marathon to break the limits I once accepted and push my body to a new level of peak activity. My preparation is fueled by early morning miles, discipline, and the goal of crossing that finish line stronger than I started.
2. You've been a passionate Outdoor Lab supporter for quite a few years. What does your involvement in the program look like and why is this work important to you?
My involvement with Outdoor Lab is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my role as a counselor at Arvada West. I manage the journey for our Outdoor Lab high school leaders, mentoring them through the application process, supporting them during their week on-site, and helping them process the experience afterward. This work is vital because I see firsthand how the program acts as a catalyst for growth; our students return with a newfound sense of responsibility and a deeper connection to their community. It’s not just a trip; for many, it's the moment they realize they can truly lead and request to return to Outdoor Lab over and over again.
3. How do you stay focused during challenging times, either running or in life?
My biggest challenges usually arise when life interrupts my rhythm, whether it's an unexpected illness or even a scheduled vacation. The re-entry after a break is always the hardest part, both physically and mentally. I stay focused by practicing grace towards myself: I listen to my body and allow for a ramp-up period instead of demanding immediate perfection. I’ve learned that life, like a marathon, isn't ruined by a few slow miles, what matters is the commitment to keep moving forward once you're back on your feet.
4. What would you say to encourage others to try running one of the Colfax Races to support Outdoor Lab?
Outdoor Lab is a rite of passage that has shaped generations of Jeffco students, teaching them leadership, stewardship and a love for the outdoors. By running Colfax for the Foundation, you aren't just hitting the pavement, you’re ensuring that future Jeffco students continue to have these life-changing experiences. Whether you walk the 5K or tackle the Marathon, your miles directly support the 'lab' where our kids find their confidence. Let’s lace up to keep the legacy alive! |
Annamae's reflection makes me want to give running a try! How about you? We need 25 racers to get a free tent at the Charity Village where we will spread the word about Outdoor Lab’s impact on Jefferson County's youth. If you are feeling competitive, sign up a relay team for a chance to donate your winnings to Outdoor Lab! Race prices go up January 28th, so sign up today!
