How Values Taught Today Shape |
This Veterans Day, we're honored to share a letter of gratitude from Devin Hughes, who is currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Army. Devin's reflections on his time as a High School Leader and Intern at Outdoor Lab demonstrate how deeply these experiences shape young people—staying with them far into their futures. His words reinforce what we know to be true: this program has life-changing impacts. |
An Open Letter of Gratitude to Outdoor Lab |

While attending McClain High School, I served as a High School Leader for Outdoor Lab and then returned to be an intern. I’m currently on active duty in the U.S. Army at Buckley Space Force Base and pursuing a degree in Secondary Education at Red Rocks Community College. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Outdoor Lab for the impact it provides to students, the community, and individuals like myself.
As someone who grew up outside Jeffco, my first experience with Outdoor Lab, as a High School Leader, was my introduction to a true sense of community, appreciation, and care for others that the program embodies. I often say that this program changed my life for the better, and I’ve seen it resonate with so many others, from sixth graders to high schoolers, to teachers and staff. It taught me that moments like licking dirt or working through twelve-hour days are made worth it by the mission and values that Outdoor Lab represents. While “school” is part of the program's name, it would be inaccurate to define it as such. Outdoor Lab is a unique experience that creates bonds more powerful than time itself.

The program is much more than just an outdoor camp or school; it's a place where students and staff are provided with the right environment and opportunities to discover who they are and become who they want to be. Everyone, every week, is given a clean start, regardless of what may be happening in their lives. This is especially true for students who may face adversity at home or school. They get a chance to explore who they are during this life-changing time in their lives. The core classes cover the fundamentals of the curriculum, but the most impactful moments happen at the dinner table and in the bunkhouse, where interns set strong examples and High School Leaders shine as role models.
The ideas taught by this incredible group of people continue to provide unforgettable experiences to 6th graders and staff alike. The passion of these people allows students a wide variety of access to unique people who share the common interest of the students. It takes a village to make lasting impacts, and I couldn't be more grateful to those who dedicate their time and care to such a fantastic program. At the heart of this effort are our backbone: the high school leaders, teachers, staff, donors, and parents, who all contribute to the community I call Outdoor Lab.

When I joined the Army, I continued to live by the values of ICARE and the belief that a community is what you make of it. Life isn’t just about looking toward the future; it’s about being present and appreciating what each moment has to offer. I’ve learned that what people need most today is a sense of community and individuals who are determined to be a positive influence in their surroundings. Whether in basic training or the classroom, one person’s willingness to lead by example can inspire change in many others.
I’m eternally grateful to Outdoor Lab, the teachers, staff, volunteers, donors, and especially the 6th graders (the core of the program) for the profound, life-changing opportunity you’ve selflessly given to me and so so many others. With deepest gratitude, Devin Hughes |
